How do I know my milk is safe?
Dairy Farmers of Canada has developed standards that help farmers ensure their cows' health and the safety of their cows' milk. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) samples and tests each truckload of milk for chemical residues (including antibiotics), as well as microorganisms.
Dairy Farming is high tech!
Dairy farms use machines for milking, computer-controlled heating and cooling systems, automatic sorting gates and more. Farmers also use pedometers, strapped to a cow’s leg to record the animals’ motion patterns (walking, standing still, lying down), then relays the data to a computer. This helps the farmers to identify if a cow is sick as fewer steps than normal can be an indication of illness.
