Pesticides and the Environment

Pesticides and the Environment

Did you know most of the spray that comes out of a farmer’s sprayer is actually water? The amount of active ingredient (pesticide) is around a pop can per football field!

How is the environment protected?

Health Canada is responsible for reviewing information about the environmental effects of ingredients contained in each pesticide.  Each pesticide label has restrictions that relate to the timing, frequency of applications rate of product application, required distances from sensitive areas and more.

Reducing the need for pesticides

Pesticides are expensive and reducing pesticide application is beneficial to the farmer’s bottom line. Over the years, farming practices have improved and the adoption of global positioning systems (GPS), new crop varieties and genetically engineered crops are helping to reduce pesticide usage.
