Natacha Hogan is an Assistant Professor of Animal Science at a leading Canadian university. Natacha is the first to admit the title isn’t nearly exciting as the work; in fact her title can be a little misleading, because she does so much more. As one of five Northern Ecosystem Toxicology Initiative (NETI) researchers, Natasha uses her training as a toxicologist to address contaminant issues in animal health.

Her days usually involve teaching classes, supervising students and administration duties, plus meeting with her five graduate students who tackle some of the most critical issues associated with contaminant exposure and animal health. Natacha loves the diversity of her work and, being at the top of her profession, she gets to work with some of the brightest minds in seeking solutions to animal health issues. Natacha uses her expertise in toxicology and animal physiology to answer important questions about how feed contamination influences health of production animals and develop strategies to reduce exposure. Although she admits an academic life isn’t always easy, she feels the rewards are truly incredible.

With a degree in animal science, or a PhD in biology with a focus on animal toxicology as Natacha has, there is an incredible and growing number of opportunities for people who have interest in working with animals. Whether their desire lies in research, development of animal pharmaceuticals, biotech or a career in environmental science, there are vast opportunities for those who want an education and are willing to put in the work.

After her day is done, Natacha’s focus switches to the numerous responsibilities of raising her young family. With an infant and a four-year-old, the excitement doesn’t stop there either. As she is an avid cross-fit athlete, Natacha enjoys time keeping life active and healthy for her family through various recreational activities.
